The Stand of io9

BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT: Need your input for a letter of support to Rob.

Last month a little piece sparked more interest than expected here on the observation deck. It’s now well past time to take the ideas you gave and that amazing potential and translate it into action.

Before we begin, special thanks to

SiriusT, burnw00tburn, Knight_of-Pentacles, Pontifex, Jman40513, KatjaKat, Archnemesis_Goldenhair, artiofab, speccy4i, DorthyDandridgeEyes, Captain$wa993r, Chuck E., abd, dented, marakins, for your thoughts and words and support, already freely given.

First I’m sorry for the slow pace. There are two reasons. Life can get tragically full, which is why I haven’t ran with your ideas already and why I’m not making dozens and dozens of nickels off of your brilliance already. Bahahahaa…. Oh wait….

Second, I really couldn’t figure out a name for this post.

SOS Save our site! No…

Accelerate to io9 speed. Kinda cool, but what’s the jerk function?

It’s a Trap… Too honest.

Let’s make io9 great again! Eeeeep!

Honestly, I couldn’t even figure out io9’s fate until a few weeks ago when news of the type of gawker bankruptcy finally came out. Simply put, if you don’t know what kind of apocalypse you’re facing, it’s hard to cancel it.

Gawker is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy which is far less terrifying than all the other chapters (which read very much like the Red wedding chapter.) However it feels like a march to the scaffolds for those who have been there before. To understand my meaning, I have a confession to make, I was a Saturn Fan, once.

Saturn was a different kind of car company. Sure they never were really high quality, or astounding performers but they had a style that captivated me. They were born from GM, stood apart from GM, but towards the end, they had so much GM in them they were basically rebranded Pontiacs. When the sales came, no one was interested and Saturn ceased to exist.

Now look at Gizmodo,

Now go back to io9.gizmodo.

Now I’m on a horse.

Ok back to io9.

They’re the same site, aren’t they? When the sales come, Gizmodo will thrive, but we’re all just going to …. disappear …like tears …in rain.

but this is the type of apocalypse we’re going to cancel.

To borrow a quote from my favorite alcoholic, W Churchill.

We shall defend our site,

whatever the cost may be,

we shall fight before the sale,

we shall fight to remain,

we shall fight in the forums and in the sites,

we shall fight to exist

we shall never surrender.

and that is the plan, simply put. Let me try to explain it with a little better sobriety.

We shall defend our site,

whatever the cost may be,

In short here it is up front, if all else fails, we will try a kickstarter type campaign to fund either io9 directly or a spiritual successor. I have already discussed starting a CMS with web developers, the framework isn’t hard. I’ll throw what I can at this, can you?

(Full disclosure, I don’t want a dime out of any of this, I just want the spark of io9 to remain.)

we shall fight before the sale,

Yet, we’re not in that sad state yet. lucky for us, We’re already headed by a mailman from beyond the post-apocalypse. Rob Brickman. Our first step is to write him a letter, pledge our support, and help form io9 into a distinct entity. It must be something that will not go down into obscurity. In the comments, please add your contributions to the letter. The letter will be the next post, next week.

we shall fight to remain,

After Gawker is sold in August, we will fight, support and strive to remain a part, we shall expand our identity into something it’s new owners can cherish. Ideas that were offered before such as

  1. granted modding privileges to reduce trolls in the comments,
  2. elevating O Deck submissions to improve the sense of community contribution and to reduce the deadline strains on the writers,
  3. expand the TV shows that are covered.
  4. better instructions and tutorials to improve posts and something to make it more community oriented.
  5. A refocus on science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, science, futurism, retro-futurism, every that io9 was and is rebuilt
  6. Expand to beyond reporting, offer chances for Challenges stories: Identifying problems that are hurting others or society
  7. Solutions Post: A round table open thread discussion oh how to solve world probelms and actions to take
  8. Instructions: A solution set from everything from getting clean water to giving a TED talk, CJA style.

9. How to Dreams: Concept writing prompts, science fiction, the place for dreamers to inspire.

we shall fight in the forums and in the sites,

we shall fight to exist

If the new owners do write off io9, we will retreat to our Google+, our other hideouts, our sanctuaries and rebuild. We will take the kernel of what once was, and what needs to be and we will figure out a way to rebuild outside of the new Gawker.

Please add anything and everything you think needs to be part of this plan.
